Minister for Economic Development, Trevor Mallard's parliamentary career began in 1984. He is the MP for Hutt South. When Labour came to term in 1999 he was given the role of Minister of Education, a post he held for six years until 2005, when he was given the Economic Development and Industry and Regional Development portfolios. He is also currently the Minister of State Owned Enterprises, Associate Minister of Finance, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Minister for the Rugby World Cup 2011. Outside the Beehive, Trevor Mallard can often be found practising what he preaches in his Sport and Recreation portfolio, by keeping active.He is a keen mountain biker, and is a frequent participant in some of New Zealand's toughest mountain bike races. When not in the saddle, he enjoys reading, walking his neighbour's dog in the local hills, watching sport and spending time with his family.
Rod Oram has 30 years’ experience as an international financial journalist. He has worked in Europe and North America for leading publications such as the Financial Times of London and traveled extensively on those continents and in Asia. Rod and his family emigrated from the UK to New Zealand in 1997. He is currently Contributing Editor at Unlimited, a New Zealand monthly magazine devoted to the development of the new economy; a columnist for the Sunday Star-Times; a regular broadcaster on radio and television; a frequent public speaker on business and economic issues; and an occasional correspondent for the Financial Times. He was Editor of the Business Herald section of the New Zealand Herald, 1997-2000. Rod is an adjunct professor in the New Zealand Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Unitec and he has contributed to several recent regional economic development projects. In the 2004 Qantas Media Awards, Rod was a triple winner as Newspaper Columnist of the Year and Magazine Feature Writer of the Year (both in the business category) and recipient of New Zealand Trade & Enterprise’s Travel Scholarship in recognition for his writing on NZ innovation.
John Swanwick is a consultant and trainer on the EFQM Excellence Model to a number of organisations in Europe covering large corporate organisations, the voluntary sector and Higher Education. He is also a Regional Academic for the Open University Business School in Continental Europe tutoring students working on the MBA Programme. He has particular research interests in business excellence and its future, future organisational structures, and in organisational strategy and deployment. John has been an assessor for the British Quality Awards and was a senior assessor for the European Quality Awards for seven years. Recently he has worked as a mentor and trainer to Senior Assessors and was involved with the 2005 review of the EFQM Model and the Fundamental Concepts of Excellence which lie behind it. Prior to 2002 John worked for Royal Mail Group and in the 1990's was its Head of Management Training and Development and later Director of Strategy for Parcelforce Worldwide, a subsidiary company. In both these roles John helped introduce concepts of Business Excellence into the Post Office and to train its managers in self assessment using the European Excellence Model. In what spare time he has he is a traveler and writer and works with field scientists on environmental and biodiversity programmes around the world. Rear Admiral David Ledson was born in Reefton, New Zealand on 13 January 1951. He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a Cadet Midshipman in January 1967 and underwent his initial training at the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay. From 1969 to 1971 Rear Admiral Ledson studied at Auckland University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He was then posted to HMNZS TARANAKI for sea training prior to going to the United Kingdom for operations courses. In July 1992 Rear Admiral Ledson was appointed as Chief of Naval Development on the staff of the Chief of Naval Staff. Between July 1994 and June 1995 Rear Admiral Ledson was posted to the United States Naval War College, Rhode Island. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed Director of Resource Policy with the Chief of Defence Force. In February 1998 Rear Admiral Ledson was posted as Captain Fleet Support on the staff of the Maritime Commander in Auckland. On 1 July 2001 with the establishment of Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand, Rear Admiral Ledson assumed the position of Maritime Component Commander at that Headquarters. He took up his current position as Chief of Navy and was promoted Rear Admiral on 8 April 2004. Rear Admiral Ledson is married to Barbara (Devery) and they live in Wellington. Matthew Tice is a the Managing Director for BSCol Asia Pacific, Australasia, and the Middle East. As a member of the Kaplan and Norton team for almost 9 years, Matthew has worked with countless organisations throughout the world to create value through rapid and effective strategy execution. In his previous position as Senior Strategy Practice Director at Renaissance Strategy Group, he established and built the Strategic Solutions practice for Renaissance in Australasia (Sydney) and Asia-Pacific (Singapore). At Renaissance, Mr. Tice directed Board, CEO, and CFO level strategy development, transformation, and Balanced Scorecard engagements with large multinational organisations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Prior to this Mr. Tice worked as a strategy consultant in North America focused on technology and telecommunications, spent time working at Coca-Cola in strategic alliance management, and the US Navy as a Nuclear Engineer. Alan Skinner is the Asia Pacific Lead Consultant for Hewlett Packard Six Sigma / Business Excellence Program, University for Technology Sydney Senior Lecturer for Business Excellence & Six Sigma and, Chair of the Australian Business Excellence Framework Steering Committee – SAI Global. Since the mid to late 1980’s Alan has been involved in the implementation of business improvement principles and practices in both public and private enterprises. Alan currently has responsibility for leading HP’s Six Sigma and Business Excellence program at the Asia Pacific level. In terms of the IT industry, Alan has held similar roles for Digital Equipment Corporation and for Compaq Computers over the last 13 years or so. As part of this work he has been involved in facilitating the development of strategy maps and business planning sessions with various Business Units, the management of the customer feedback processes, and program managing Business Excellence and improvement campaigns. Noriaki Kano is a revered Japanese professor and international consultant and the 1997 recipient of that country's Individual Deming Prize for his contributions to the world of quality improvement. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he and his colleagues laid the foundation for an approach often referred to as the Kano Model. Dr. Kano challenged the conventional customer satisfaction beliefs that the better a company delivers on each product or service attribute, the more satisfied its customers will be. Instead, Dr. Kano developed the thinking that not all service and product performance is equal in the eyes of the customer. Some performance creates higher levels of loyalty than others. Two of his well known books are titled "Attractive Quality" (Kano Method/Kano Model) and "Guide to TQM in Service Industries".
Even an hour with this man will make a difference. Dr Ian Brooks is New Zealand’s leading expert on customer care, creating customer value and becoming customer driven. Dr Brooks has written 14 books which are sold in New Zealand, Australia and several countries in the northern hemisphere. Two have been translated into Portuguese and are best sellers in Brazil. A much sought after and internationally recognised business speaker, Dr Brooks inspires and entertains over 150 audiences each year in New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Dubai, Brazil and Australia. Mr. Bill Baker was Knowledge Management & Benchmarking Champion for Raytheon from 1998-2004. He was responsible for implementation of Benchmarking and Knowledge Management activities throughout the company and integrating them in Raytheon Six Sigma™. Raytheon received the 2003 MAKE (Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise) Finalist Designation, was designated a 2004 North American Winner and recently recognized as the overall 2005 North American Winner. He was a key member of the Texas Instruments’ Baldrige winning team in 1992 and the Knowledge Management design and deployment team known as “Best Practice Sharing” implemented in 1995 and highlighted in the book “If We Only Knew What We Know” by O’Dell and Jackson in 1995. He has contributed articles to the National Productivity Review, Quality Progress magazine and his work has been featured in numerous books. He is a frequent speaker on Benchmarking, Performance Measurement, Knowledge Management, Raytheon Six Sigma and the Lean Enterprise. David Parmenter is the CEO of Waymark Solutions, a performance management company. David is a leading expert in: the development of winning KPIs, replacing the annual planning process with quarterly rolling planning, and converting reporting to a decision based tool. His work on KPIs has received international recognition. His book “Key Performance Indicators – Developing, Implementing and Using Winning KPIs” is to be published by John Wiley & Sons in December 06. His KPI white paper accessible on www.bettermanagement.com was the most downloaded paper in 2005 on that site. The New York Times referred to Dr. Harrington as having a “…knack for synthesis and an open-mind about packaging his knowledge and experience in new ways.” Dr. Harrington is recognized worldwide as the guru in performance improvement. He has authored 23 books, 11 CD-Roms and hundreds of articles on performance improvement. He was a Project Manager for IBM for over 30 years and a principal for Ernst and Young Consulting for over 10 years. He was responsible for the three year E&Y health care study that compared systems in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Germany. He served as the CEO of Systemcorp, a software developer. He served as president and Chairman of the Board for the American Society for Quality and the prestigious International Academy for Quality. He was the official quality advisor to the Chinese government for 15 years and was elected to the Singapore Hall of Fame. He was elected Honorary Fellow in societies in eight nations. He has helped many public, private, and non-profit making organizations streamline their processes and knowledge management systems. He has received numerous awards and a number of national and international quality awards have been named after him.
Greg Searson brings a unique approach to continuous improvement, developing programs that quickly change organisational cultures. Hubert K. Rampersad, B.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., born in 1957, is an internationally respected and recognized consultant in the field of Organizational Behavior and Business Management. He is Chairman of the Board and President of TPS International Inc. in Silicon Valley, California. He received his formal education in The Netherlands earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Enschede Polytechnic Institute, an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and Robotics from Delft University of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Management from Eindhoven University of Technology. Dr. Rampersad is author of 12 books and about 100 articles in leading international journals. His international bestseller “ Total Performance Scorecard” has been translated in 22 languages. His related article “The Links Between Individual Learning, Collective Learning and Ethics“was awarded with “The most outstanding paper” in the UK. Cyndi Crother-Laurin, Ph.D. is an author, popular keynote speaker, and organizational consultant. Brian Dolan is Director of Dolan & Holt Consultancy Ltd, UK, and is currently working as Director of Service Improvement and Patient Flow at Christchurch Hospital. His last post was as Executive Director of Modernisation and Service Improvement at a large National Health Service hospital trust on the south coast of England where he was also Clinical Director of Emergency Services. Drawing on wide experience from his clinical background, he currently works with hospitals and primary care organisations addressing patient flow and worked with the Department of Health’s (England) Winter Emergency Services Team (WEST) and as part of Intensive Support Teams of the DH Emergency Care Strategy Team to support hospitals and health systems in greatest need. He has also written, lectured and worked internationally on terrorism, addressing overcrowding in A&E, organizational leadership and culture change. He has published over 100 papers in a range of medical, nursing and paramedic journals and is the co-editor of an international best-selling book on emergency nursing, now in its eighth reprint.
